Join our Primary team on a trip to the Isle of Mull in Argyll and Bute. đĽď¸Â
The Exchange is now the counselling provider for Argyll and Bute Council - the second-largest Scottish council in terms of administrative area. Our team are excited to work with the needs of the children, young people and families in this diverse rural area which includes some primary schools with only 6 pupils!
The area includes some of the most beautiful scenery in Scotland. Known for whiskey, seafood and its rich history, Argyll & Bute has also been a filming location for Hollywood films such as the rolling hills from James Bondâs âTo Russia, With Loveâ and âJurassic World: Fallen Kingdomâ and a most recent episode of Black Mirror.
Our intrepid counsellors have unusual commutes that can take them on ferry rides or tiny roads with stunning views. Our team shared some breath taking pictures that capture the beauty of their journey to work. From the shimmering water to the picturesque landscapes, their daily commute is an adventure in itself and a great way to recharge and enjoy the scenic views before starting their workday.
Among the young people, loneliness and isolation is commonly reported, along with issues related to friendship groups. It can be particularly challenging for young people in Argyll and Bute to maintain friendships due to their location when they return home to the islands for the summer.
Due to the rural and wide-spanning locations of schools and homes, when young people move to high school it can be that their only option is to stay away from home to attend school. Some young people in Oban and Dunoon (among others) stay in a hostel during the week as travel home to their island wouldnât be viable. Our newest Counsellor Bea spent time there with the young people in residence and found it heartening that the hostel is providing a nurturing environment for young people who have no choice but to be away from home for sustained lengths of time.
The recent Drama Mental Health Awareness Day at Lochgilphead Secondary School was also a great success. The counsellors who attended were able to provide valuable insights and advice on important topics related to vaping and mental health. The presence of the school's counsellor ensured that the young people had access to professional support and guidance throughout the day. The event provided a safe and supportive environment for students to ask questions and learn more about these important issues.
All in all a successful start to what we hope to be a long (and scenic) journey working with children, young people and families in Argyll & Bute.
